Manuscript evaluations

You’ve completed a manuscript! Congratulations! Pat yourself on the back for successfully getting to “The End.” Many people start this journey, but few finish.

A manuscript evaluation is a comprehensive “view from the balcony” assessment of your manuscript. Rather than drilling down into sentence structure or correct verb tense, the focus of a manuscript evaluation is on broader issues such as narrative voice, plot, story logic, pacing, dialogue, character development.

An evaluation is valuable because after working so hard on your book, it can be difficult to see the proverbial forest for the trees.

An evaluation report includes:

  • A comprehensive overview of what’s working
  • Identifies problem areas
  • Suggestions for improvement
  • Tips on craft
  • Resources for improving content

Manuscript Edit

A manuscript edit is that line-by-line deep dive. This means pulling out the magnifying glass and studying the text to find the deeper problems within the sentences and paragraphs. The author receives detailed feedback on specific sections of text that are not working and suggestions on how to fix them.

An edit includes track changes covering:

  • Corrections and suggestions for improvement on specific verbiage in the text.
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Spelling
  • Logic flow and structure
  • Tips on craft
  • Resources for improving content
